Air Abrasion allows us to remove decay on teeth without even touching them, making your dental appointments more comfortable. Air Abrasion involves the use of a special handpiece that creates a beam of microscopic abrasive particles propelled by a gentle stream of dry compressed air. By precisely directing the stream onto the flat surfaces of teeth, we can remove small worn-out fillings, eliminate small stains or defects in the surface of the tooth, clean out cavities and prepare teeth for fillings and sealants.
Frequently Asked Questions About Air Abrasion
What are the differences between Air Abrasion and conventional drilling?
Both Air Abrasion and conventional drilling methods achieve the same results, to prepare and treat cavities. Some of the differences you’ll notice with Air Abrasion are:
Air Abrasion has a quieter, more soothing sound
Air Abrasion is usually faster than normal conventional drilling
Most people find they require little or no anesthesia
Air Abrasion is able to explore stains to catch and treat minor decay before it spreads.
Is Air Abrasion safe?
Absolutely! The tiny abrasive powder, called aluminum oxide, is a biocompatible substance used in medicine and food. It is a prime ingredient in several whitening toothpastes. Due to the speed and efficiency of the AirTouch system, only a very small amount is used.
Will I need an anesthetic?
Most people use Air Abrasion without any anesthetic, but it is up to you. Expect to feel a cool sensation that gradually increases to cold, but it is not painful. Keep in mind, you will feel something because you will not be numb.
When can Air Abrasion be used and how will the cavity be filled?
Air Abrasion is able to remove much smaller sections of tooth material, so it is appropriate for treating small areas of decay or cavities in the earliest stages. By eliminating smaller amounts of tooth material, more of your healthy enamel is left intact. Only tooth-colored, composite filling material is used on Air Abrasion procedures. This leaves your tooth looking natural, as if there was no cavity at all.
