What is periodontal/gum disease?
Periodontal disease is the inflammation and swelling of the gums. It is caused by bacteria in plaque that produce toxins which infect gums, teeth and bone. Periodontal disease can be both an acute or chronic disease, and if not treated can lead to tooth or bone loss, as well as stroke or heart disease.

What can I do to avoid periodontal disease?
-Brush and floss your teeth regularly (brush twice a day and floss once a day).
-Visit your dentist and hygienist for dental exams, x-rays and cleanings at least twice a year.
-Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco.
-Visit your physician regularly to check for diabetes and other health conditions that contribute to periodontal disease.

What are some warning signs of gum disease?
-Your gums bleed or are red, puffy, swollen or sore.
-Your gums have pulled away from the teeth.
-Pus that appears between the teeth and gums.
-Constant bad breath or bad taste in your mouth.
