Why is oral hygiene important?
Taking good care of your mouth is important to prevent plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth or bone loss as well as stroke or heart disease. One way that you can help save your teeth and catch periodontal issues early is by routinely coming to visit the dentist and hygienist for checkups.

Any recommendations when choosing oral hygiene products?

Soft toothbrush: a soft toothbrush is kinder to your gums and teeth, and is more effective in removing plaque below the gum line.

Toothpaste with fluoride: Fluoride hardens the outer layer of the teeth. It might stop a cavity in its tracks and give resistance to future cavities.

Toothpaste for sensitive teeth: Use a toothpaste that contains the ingredient potassium nitrate with a soft or extra-soft toothbrush.

Electric toothbrush: When using an electric toothbrush, make sure you are letting the toothbrush do the work and angle the brush towards the gum line. Most electric toothbrushes have a self-timer included in the brush, which ensures you are brushing for the recommended time.

Remember to always replace your toothbrush or electric brush head every 3 – 4 months.
