Child Dentistry
Peppes Dental gladly sees children of all ages. We
feel it’s important for children to have the knowledge
of what makes a healthy smile and to get started on
good dental habits that will last a lifetime.

When should my child start seeing the dentist?
We recommend your child’s first dental visit at the age of 3. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to call us. In the meantime, as soon as your child gets his/her first teeth, you should begin cleaning them after feedings with a moist gauze pad or washcloth. When your child is comfortable with a toothbrush, brush his/her teeth twice a day with an extra-soft toothbrush. Use a pea sized amount of toothpaste if your child likes toothpaste. If not, it’s fine to brush without toothpaste. Gently floss your child’s teeth each day, and pay particular attention to areas where the teeth are close together.

What should I tell my child about the first dental visit?
Your child’s first dental visit should be a positive one. It’s a quick and easy process, one that usually ends in a smile. Our hygienist will count their teeth, and then polish them until they “sparkle”. The dentist will then come in to check your child’s teeth. Before leaving, the hygienist will present your child with some dental goodies to take home!

How can I help keep my child’s teeth as healthy as possible?
-Help them brush and make sure to monitor them daily
-Gently floss their teeth to remove food and plaque
-Come see the dentist and hygienist every 6 months
-Get a new toothbrush every 4-6 months
-Use fluoride toothpaste

Children learn best by imitations, so let them watch you as you brush and floss your teeth. Regular praise of their homecare efforts and a positive example will get your child started down the path of excellent oral hygiene.
